Museum Section and Committee
In collaboration with the museum's employees, the museum volunteers' duty is to maintain, present, and develop the Museum of Student Life established in 1958 (under the name Polytechnic Museum). The museum is administered by Aalto University Student Union. After a long renovation, the museum reopened its doors in the autumn of 2021. Museum volunteers are divided into two different organisational levels: the Museum Section and its Committees. The section includes approximately 5 members, each responsible for their own areas of the daily operations of the museum. Other museum volunteers and guides are part of the Museum Committee, which annually consists of about twenty-thirty members, and the Marmon Committee with a dozen members.
Museum Section
As a member of the section you could be responsible for areas such as organising freshers' tours, coordinating open doors -days, leading the Museum Committee, arranging events, planning and preparing exhibitions, training guides, managing communications, and organising recreational activities, among others. We have opportunities for individuals with various skills - you can build and dismantle, brainstorm new ideas, and maintain existing ones. As long as you have the enthusiasm, we offer meaningful and significant activities for everyone.
The section, consisting of about 5 members, is led by the chairperson of the Museum section.
Museum Committee
The bulk of the museum's volunteers work in the Museum Committee, overseen and organised by the Section. The Committee includes museum guides, who are essential representatives of the museum. Anyone can become a guide, regardless of their year or field of study. It usually takes about half an academic year of practising with more experienced museum volunteers to grow into a confident tour guide. Guided tours in English have long been a part of daily life for our skilled guides, and diverse language skills are always welcome.
As a member of the Museum Committee, you can choose to not only become a museum guide, but for example organise events, plan and develop exhibitions, make some content for the museum, or even craft new displays! Committee members are expected to host our open doors on Sundays a couple of times per term. The museum reflects its creators, and despite its name, it's not stuck in the past but always looks to the future. Any Aalto student can apply for the Museum Committee, regardless of their field of study!
Marmon Committee
Alongside the Museum Committee, we also recruit enthusiastic caretakers for our Marmon car. Marmon is AYY's valuable and historical convertible from 1927 and has been used for decades in student events and campaigns, such as Wappu parades and Tempaus promotion. Marmon is maintained by a compact group of volunteers; working with Marmon could include several years' worth of learning or even a life-long hobby. As a museum volunteer focusing on Marmon, you'll participate in maintenance and communications, and maybe eventually even become a chauffeur! No prior experience with vehicles is necessary; our long-term Marmonites will guide you through the vehicle's secrets and traditions.
