Apartment types
Single Room in a Shared Apartment
A single room in a shared apartment. One apartment can have 2-12 single rooms and a common space with a kitchen, possible living room, toilet and/or bathroom. Keeping the common areas clean is the responsibility of all tenants. Bigger single rooms have their own bathroom/toilet and a fridge. The room doors have locks that only work with the tenant’s key. Communal spaces can be accessed with any of the tenant keys.
Single rooms in a shared apartment do not have any furniture. The apartment has a fridge and a freezer either in the room or the common kitchen, and the kitchen has an oven and a stove. Closet space can be found in the kitchen and the apartment room. Communal spaces mostly have a table and chairs. Tips for obtaining furniture can be found here.
The room is the tenant’s personal space. You cannot change rooms with other tenants, and keeping pets and having other people over for prolonged lengths of time is not allowed. Single rooms in a shared apartment can be only applied alone, not for example with a spouse for a friend.

A studio room in a shared apartment is a cross between shared apartment rooms and single room apartments, combining communal living with the peace of a single room apartment. Each tenant has their personal rooms with their own toilet/bathroom and a kitchenette, equipped with a fridge, freezer, oven and stove. In addition, the apartment shares a common anteroom and in some cases a common balcony with one or more other apartments. Keeping the anteroom and balcony clean is the responsibility of all the tenants.

Two-room and Bigger Apartments
Apartments with two rooms or more are good for families with children, couples and apartments with friends. AYY does not have specific family or friend apartments; the tenants can do the decision on what kind of apartments would be suited for them when they apply.
Apartments with two rooms or more are always unfurnished. The kitchen has a fridge, freezer, stove and oven. In addition, the apartment has at least one bathroom/toilet. The apartments also have built-in closets.
The number of bedrooms is dependant on the type. Two-room apartments with the note “2x br” have two bedrooms, and a two room apartment “lr+br” has one bedroom and one living room. Three-room apartments have two bedrooms and a living room, and four room apartments have three bedrooms and a living room.
A shared two-room apartment is an apartment which has its own kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom. In addition, the apartment shares a common anteroom and in some cases a common balcony with one or more other apartments. Keeping the anteroom and balcony clean is the responsibility of the tenants. There are shared two-room apartments in Leppävaara and Jämeräntaival.
Who can apply: In family apartments at least one applicant needs to be a member of AYY with a right of residence. In friends apartments all applicants have to be AYY members with a right of residence.
A joint tenancy agreement is made for friend and family apartments. It is not possible to have separate agreements, as this would make the apartment a shared apartment with single rooms (see above: Single Room in a Shared Apartment). This affects the housing allowance from Kela. An alternative is to apply for a shared apartment and suggest a friend to share it with.
