Why get involved?

Residents hold decision-making power in their own living environment. If you've ever wondered why the residents' club room is underused or why the backyard grill remains unused, your involvement can bring about change. Joining a residents' committee allows you to brainstorm ideas for events like small clubhouse gatherings or monthly cooking evenings. Additionally, utilizing the residents' budget, you can address issues like fixing the grill and organizing a barbecue evening for residents.

What is a residents' committee?

Within a residents' committee, you wield influence over the allocation of annual tenant democracy funds, enabling you to propose and organize resident-centric activities and events. As the chair of a residents' committee, you can also nominate yourself for election to the Housing Cooperative (ASY), broadening your impact on financial and property matters across the entire rental stock. Through the residents' committee, you'll not only connect with your immediate neighbors but also with committees in other buildings. Remember, you're never alone in generating ideas and taking action, as you'll have continuous support from a tenant activity coordinator at AYY. During your tenure, you'll also forge connections with other residents' committees through various meetings.

Where and when can I participate?

This year, the residents' meetings will be organized by AYY at Kandidaattikeskus on 29th and 30th of November. Invitations will be sent out a week prior, detailing the date and time of your building's meeting.

The meeting will commence with a review of AYY's financial and real estate matters, including rent determinations. Subsequently, residents will convene in their respective building meetings to elect a residents' committee and chairperson for the upcoming year, and propose suggestions for enhancing the living environment. Additionally, the residents' assembly holds the right to nominate a candidate for AYY's financial board.

Government cuts put a stop to the construction of student housing

We are shocked by the recent cuts of the Finnish Government which put student housing and its construction at stake. In its session on spending limits, the Government made significant cuts to the special group investment grants for student housing construction, which makes the commencement of already planned housing projects in the capital region uncertain and complicates the housing situation for students as well as the housing activities of the Aalto University Student Union (AYY).
