AYY’s art collection expanded with six works on the theme of peace

At the end of 2023, Aalto University Student Union’s art collection was expanded with six works of art. The artwork call was open to members in November with the theme ‘Peace’.

Six new works have been chosen to complement the art collection of Aalto University Student Union: Maisema / Landscape (2302-1) (Alex Baer 2023), Immigrant (Carlos Daniel Perez Moreno 2023), Atmosphere in, viscera out (Genietta Varsi 2022), Cloud Formations (Benjamin Robson 2023), Turvapaikka / Safe place (Tomas Heinonen 2022) and Noste (Mira Niittymäki 2022).

The theme of the art collection call was ‘Peace’ due to the prevailing world situation. The selected works go hand in hand with the theme, creating an intriguing set that includes a wide range of techniques and materials. The jury consisted of art critic Sini Mononen as an art expert, AYY representative Ene Rönkkö and TOKYO representative Monika Hauck. The artwork call was open to members in November 2023.

The works are on display in the changing exhibition space of the Museum of Student Life maintained by AYY. The museum is open on Sundays from 2 pm to 4 pm.

‘Museums play an important role in facilitating social debate, promoting knowledge and education, and fostering a sense of community. With these diverse works in the new exhibition, we provide time for discussion, pause, and reflection during your museum visit. In the spirit of the exhibition theme, we encourage our community to think about peace, speak and write about peace, and work for peace’, Museum Director Anna Merikari says.

AYY expands its art collection annually through the artwork call open to members. The next artwork call will open in late 2024.

Government cuts put a stop to the construction of student housing

We are shocked by the recent cuts of the Finnish Government which put student housing and its construction at stake. In its session on spending limits, the Government made significant cuts to the special group investment grants for student housing construction, which makes the commencement of already planned housing projects in the capital region uncertain and complicates the housing situation for students as well as the housing activities of the Aalto University Student Union (AYY).
