Membership fee

In order to enrol as an attending degree student at Aalto University, you must pay the membership fee of Aalto University Student Union (AYY).

Enrolment for the academic year 2024 - 2025

For continuing students, the enrolment period for the 2024–2025 academic year is from 2 May to 30 August 2024. New students can enroll after they have accepted their study place until 30 August 2024. 

The enrolment period for spring term 2025 is from 25 November 2024 to 3 January 2025.

As a member of the student union, you are entitled to many benefits. You can order a student card and you are entitled to Kela’s meal subsidy and the student discount of VR and Matkahuolto. 

Please note that the enrolment status can only be changed during the enrolment period. Outside of enrolment periods, non-attending status may be changed to attending status.

Amount of membership fee 2024–2025

Undergraduate students pay the AYY membership fee when making the enrolment for the academic year. Doctoral students can choose to pay the membership fee upon enrolment. Exchange students and doctoral students can join the student union in the middle of the academic year by requesting payment instructions from Aalto student services at [email protected].

Bachelor's and master's degree students and exchange students

Remember to pay the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) fee to Kela (Social Insurance Institution of Finland).

PLEASE NOTE! You can no longer pay the membership fee of a guild or subject association in connection with the enrolment. Membership fees are paid directly to each association.

Payment of the student union membership fee

New students

After accepting your offer of admission, enrol for attendance in the OILI service of Studyinfo and pay the membership fee of the student union (AYY). The membership fee is paid with online bank user identifiers. The membership fees of guilds and subject associations are paid separately to each association.The student benefits of new students, such as the student card, will start to work at the start of the new academic year on 1 Aug or on 1 Jan for those who begin their studies in the spring term. 

If you are unable to pay the membership fee directly through OILI, please contact your own student affairs office or Aalto Student Services ([email protected]).

You can only use Aalto services, receive a student number and register for courses once you have enrolled for attendance. 

After accepting the offer of admission, first-year students may enrol for non-attendance only due to military or non-military service, parental leave or illness or disability that prevents them from starting their studies. More information on the enrolment can be found on the Aalto website.

Exchange students

As an exchange student, you can join the student union if you wish. You can become a member once you have received the Aalto University student number. You can live in AYY housing only if you are a member of the student union.  As an exchange student, you can join the student union at any time, so it is possible to become a member even after the enrolment period.

I´m an exchange student, how can I become a member of AYY?

  1. Pay the membership fee via bank transfer. Request the payment information by sending an email to [email protected].
  2. Pay the membership fee by following the instructions.
  3. Send the receipt of your payment to [email protected].
  4. Once Aalto Student Services recieve your receipt, your student status will be updated to AYY member. It takes 1-5 working days for the information to be updated to AYY membership register and from there to student card provider Frank. After that, you can download the Frank app that is your free digital student card.

    Please note that as the membership is optional for exchange students, the membership fee will not be refunded even if you cancel your membership. Therefore, we recommend that you become a member once you are sure that you will study at Aalto and want to join the student union.

Continuing students

Enrol for attendance and pay the student union membership fee in the OILI service. The membership fee is paid with online bank user identifiers when the payment and enrolment are registered directly in the student register.

Doctoral students

As a doctoral student, you can join the student union at the OILI service in connection with the enrolment if you wish. if you did not pay the AYY membership fee in OILI when making the enrollment, you can join AYY anytime by paying the membership fee via bank transfer. You can request the payment information from Aalto Student Services via [email protected]

I´m a doctoral student, how can I become a member of AYY?

  1. Pay the AYY membership fee in the OILI service when making the enrollment to Aalto.

If you did not pay the membership fee in the enrolling period, you can join AYY later in the year be following these steps:

  1. Pay the membership fee via bank transfer. Request the payment information by sending an email to [email protected].
  2. Pay the membership fee by following the instructions.
  3. Send the receipt of your payment to [email protected].
  4. Once Aalto Student Services recieve your receipt, your student status will be updated to AYY member. It takes 1-5 working days for the information to be updated to AYY membership register and from there to student card provider Frank. After that, you can download the Frank app that is your free digital student card. The app will automatically identify you as a doctoral student.

The membership fee is smaller than the fee for degree students, as the benefits are more limited.

Membership fee refunds

All refund applications must be submitted using the form at the end of this page at the latest:

30 Sept for the autumn term
31 Jan for the spring term

You can change your enrolment information by contacting the university’s student service point, where the changes are recorded to the student information system.

Please note that the annual enrolment period usually ends a couple of weeks earlier than the application period for AYY's membership fee refund. You must have changed your enrolment from attending to non-attending during the annual enrolment period in order to receive the membership fee refund.

The AYY Board’s decision on membership fee refunds can be found in the minutes of the first board meeting of the year 2022.

Year tag for student card

You can only collect the year tag from the student union that issued your student card. AYY’s services office therefore only gives the year tag for AYY’s student card to AYY members who have paid the membership fee. Student cards issued by the former Student Union of the Helsinki School of Economics (KY), Student Union of the University of Art and Design (TOKYO) and Student Union of the Helsinki University of Technology (TKY) are also regarded as AYY student cards.

We also recommend downloading Frank App's free digital student card in order to receive all the student benefits! The digital card will start working 1–3 days after the membership fee and attendance information have been recorded.

As a member of AYY, you can also start using your student card in Pivo.

You can pick up the year tag for your student card from the services office within the opening hours.
