2. Futuretalks: Facing/Fading Frontiers on 17 Dec 2018

Free movement has removed obstacles from the free exchange of knowledge and research in Europe and promoted versatile study and employment opportunities. Why is it still worth going on exchange, and what else does free movement enable? In which direction is free movement heading – are there new digital and tangible barriers rising in Europe?

Welcome to the Futuretalks discussion event on Monday 17 Dec at 4–6 pm in Kipsari, Väre to discuss the burning themes of Europe together with e.g. journalist Riku Rantala, Member of the European Parliament Miapetra Kumpula-Natri and Sitra’s Senior Lead Laura Halenius!

The event is part of the Futuretalks series delving into topical phenomena in Europe from the point of view of influencing. The event series deepens perspectives and the contexts of decision-making on burning themes via opening discussions.

3. Supplementary application to Student representative in Aalto University administration

  • Entrepreneurship Programme Committee, 1 ordinary and 1 deputy member

4. Polyteekkari Museum renovations starting – volunteer forces needed!

The Polyteekkari Museum renovations are about to start, and helping hands are needed. Assisting in the different stages of the move and renovations will not only earn you glory, fame and a happy feeling but also an attachment to the project rope given out for the first time.

The first chance to help out is on Saturday 15 Dec when the Museum is moving away ahead of the renovations. Help is welcome at around 11 am–5 pm, and you can show up when it suits you either for a little while or for the whole day. There will be food and drinks provided for the helpers. Sign up as a helping hand at http://bit.ly/museonmuutto18. Let us know what time you think you can join us and your possible dietary requirements.

P.S. The next time help is needed is probably in August 2019 when the new Polyteekkari Museum is being renovated. The move back will take place in autumn 2019.

More information on Telegram from Moving Chief Chriso (@Chriau) or Lensku (@Lensku).

Sign up to help move our priceless heritage into safety ahead of the Museum facilities’ renovations! Scheduling and sign-up meant for planning the helpers’ food offerings.  The combined privacy policy and information document is available here: http://bit.ly/muuttorekisteri18 (in Finnish).

15. Kino Sheryl opened in Kallio

Kino Sheryl is the art house movie theatre owned by TOKYO. The theatre got started in 2015 in Arabia’s media centre Lume and was then the first new theatre in Helsinki for 15 years. Its operations have been inactive while the School of Arts and Design was moving house.

The long-awaited return of Kino Sheryl has now taken place in Kallio, Helsinki, with the pre-opening party celebrated last weekend. The new theatre is located in the Cultural Centre Caisa’s premises at Kaikukatu 4. Repairs are still being done in the theatre to make the new premises look like Sheryl, and for this reason, the theatre is offering cinema tickets at discounted prices for the duration of the repairs. The big opening party of the theatre will be celebrated once the last of the repairs are done.

AYY ANNOUNCES

1. AYY starts recycling plastic waste next year

AYY will start recycling plastic waste in all its residential properties during 2019. Starting the recycling requires new collection bins to be installed, and/or the reorganisation of waste disposal spaces.

The residents will be informed separately once the recycling starts. However, you can start thinking about recycling plastic by reading through, for example, HSY’s instructions at https://www.hsy.fi/en/residents/sorting/instructions/Pages/Plastic.aspx.

Do you have ideas or feedback related to recycling at AYY’s apartments? You can give us your ideas and feedback at https://lomake.ayy.fi/viestinta/recycling-in-ayy-housing/.

2. Facebook group for Aalto students with family

The Aalto students with families Facebook group is a group moderated by AYY for those students who have children. In the group, you can talk about the everyday matters of families with children or maybe set up a recycling date.

The group can be found at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1632326910390380/. The group is a closed one, meaning that you need to be a member in order to see the discussion. Additionally, an admin has to approve new membership requests.

3. Teekkari cap working group established

The Guild of Architecture and Teknologföreningen published an open letter addressed to the Student Union’s Board and the Teekkari Section regarding permission to wear the Teekkari cap.

The topic has induced a lot of conversation among the Aalto community. To tackle this discussion, the AYY Board and the Teekkari Section have established a four-person working group, whose members are Teekkari Section Chair Tuomas Rantataro, Freshman Major Noora Salminen, AYY Chair of the Board Noora Vänttinen and Board member Julius Luukkanen.

The working group’s task is, above all, to look into past experiences and opinions related to the Teekkari cap as well as related thoughts and emotional charges. Based on this work, possible solutions will be formed for the future. The working group will be interviewing different parties regarding the topic in the near future.

More information: julius.luukkanen@ayy.fi

AYY ANNOUNCES

1. Apply to AYY’s Board, Sections or Committees for 2019!

The new former of the Board was appointed in Thursday’s Representative Council meeting, congratulations Tapio Hautamäki! Application to AYY Board member for 2019 remains open until Wednesday: apply to work for the good of the Aalto community and to a position in which you will develop greatly both as an influencer and a human being!

Applications to the AYY Sections remain open until 3 Dec and to the Committees for the whole of December. There are all kinds of positions on offer: for example, you can apply to join the organising of the Wappu Party (Teekkari Section/Party Committee) or the Aalto Afterparty (Aava/Afterparty Committee), to execute various sporting events (Aava/Outdoor Sports Committee), to renovate rentable facilities (Campus Section) or to advocate student benefits as an Aalto Halloped. And these were just a few of the volunteer positions at AYY: learn more about all of them at ayy.fi/stop/en/!

2. Follow AYY’s housing services on Instagram!

AYY’s housing services can now also be found on Instagram as AYY Housing. The Housing Instagram celebrates student living and shares photos of students’ homes as well as the everyday of the office.

Take part in the photo competition on Instagram and win yourself a year’s sauna evenings or the rentable facility of your choice!

We want to learn what kinds of homes the AYY apartments make, so we are challenging the residents to show off their homes on Instagram. So, share a photo of your apartment on your Instagram account and add the hashtag #ayyhousing. We will share residents’ photos on our AYY Housing account and draw three winners from among all who share their photos in November. The winners will be drawn on 4 Dec 2018, and they can choose between free weekly sauna evenings in a residential building for a year and one free booking for the AYY rentable facility of their choosing. Detailed competition rules can be found on the AYY website.

3. Apply for AYY’s exchange grant!

In the autumn, AYY is handing out exchange grants to support the internationalisation and active community operation of students. Any AYY member who is going on an exchange, is on an exchange at the moment or has returned from an exchange after April 2018 can apply for an exchange grant. The grant is meant for the degree students of Aalto University.

The grant can be applied for from 12 noon on 24 Oct until 11.59 pm on 14 Nov.

You can find the application form and further information about the grants here: https://ayy.fi/en/students/services/scholarships/

4. Apply to be in charge of the AYY10 anniversary year!

Our beloved Student Union has been forging ahead for some years already, and we are soon celebrating our first full decade. Now is, at last, the time to start recruiting for the position many have been waiting for: the person in charge of the AYY10 anniversary year!

As the person in charge of the anniversary year, you will be right at the heart of conceptualising and executing the anniversary year and the 10th annual ball itself. Will the anniversary year feature separate anniversary year spectacles, or will the usual events be organised bigger than before and with an AYY10 twist? How can we make the entire community participate in the anniversary year? And in particular, of course: where and how to organise the culmination itself, the annual ball that ends the anniversary year? You will be coordinating the section you recruite and ensure that this party will remain a conversation point for the Aalto community for a long time to come!

Application opens on Monday 5 Nov and ends on Monday 3 Dec. Apply to make AYY history!

5. Should the University change? Apply to Student representative in administration!

Student representatives in administration, or Hallopeds, are regular students who participate in the decision-making and development of the University. Students are the best experts on their own studying and the everyday of teaching. There are more than 250 posts up for grabs. The Student Union appoints the Hallopeds for a one-calendar-year term, and all members of the Student Union are eligible to apply. The application is open on 21 Oct–3 Dec 2018.

There are student representatives in the degree programmes, departments, schools and the University’s central administration. The organs include the academic affairs committees, educational councils and various other committees. The Student Union, the persons in charge of Hallopeds and the organisations’ persons in charge of studies will support the advocacy work.
