AYY Housing Office will be closed during the summer between 6th of July and 28th of July. During this time all customer service is handled through email. Unfortunately only the most pressing matters can be handled, as the Housing Office will have limited staff during the summer.

If you for example lock yourself out of your apartment, you can turn to your building’s Castle Warden or the maintenance company for help.

The Finnish tuition fee experiment will come to end in the end >>

The Finnish tuition fee experiment will come to end in the end of 2014. The reason is that the decree that has allowed the tuition fee trial will expire on 31 December 2014. At the same time, the tuition fee trial will end at Aalto University. Students who will be selected to masters’ programs in spring 2014 will no longer take part in the tuition fee trial, and they will not be charged fees, because the decree concerning the trial ends already in the end of the same year.

The decision does not affect the fees or scholarships of current Aalto students in any way. They will continue and finish their studies with the current conditions. Master’s students starting in the autumn of 2013 will pay tuition fees and receive scholarships until the end of the year of 2014, after which their last academic term is free and scholarships are not allocated. Students starting in the autumn of 2014 do not pay fees nor receive scholarships.

Aalto University’s Vice President Martti Raevaara emphasises that this does not mean that Aalto has decided to permanently discontinue fees for students coming from outside the EU and EEA area. ”The future of tuition fees in Finland is still open. If the fees are made possible at the legislative level also after the year of 2014, we will re-evaluate whether it is appropriate to introduce fees in some programmes” says Vice Rector Raevaara.

Aalto University Student Union AYY is satisfied with the decision to suspend the trial. ”We should now pause for a moment. Fee collection costs are higher than the income. In addition, fees deter international students from Aalto University. Tuition fee experiences of our neighbouring countries are not good and Finland has no reason to make the same mistakes”, says President of the Student Union Piia Kuosmanen.

1. INFORMATION ABOUT TECHNICAL PROBLEMS CONCERNING AYY’S E-MAIL LISTS

List.ayy.fi server that administers AYY’s mailing lists failed to operate on 20 May and has been restored after that from very old backup copies from August and December 2012. The service was reopened on 28 May. Recipient lists, passwords and administrators of the lists are according to information from 1 Aug 2012. List administrators will have to update this information. In case of forgotten passwords, you can get help from AYY’s IT sector as usual at tietotekniikka@ayy.fi.

Detailed instructions and background information about the problems can be found on ayy.fi at http://ayy.fi/information-about-problems-concerning-ayys-mailing-lists/.

2. CAMPUS EXPO 17-18 SEPT

This year, Campus Expo will be held in two days. On the first day on Tuesday, 17 Sept, Campus Expo will be held in the School of Economics main building lobby. On Wednesday, 18 Sept, Campus Expo is held in Otaniemi. Further information on arrangements and registration forms to be provided later.

3. AFYE PROVIDES FUNDING FOR EVENT ORGANISING

Aalto First Year Experience (AFYE) provided by Aalto University welcomes new students to the university and opens a window to various opportunities provided by Aalto, regardless of disciplinary borders. AFYE means everything that is related to a new student’s welcoming as part of the Aalto community during the first year of studies. Orientation at the schools and tutor activities are part of AFYE’s concept. In addition, we organise a variety of events and occasions and on our website we inform new students about opportunities that concern them.

AFYE invites student organisations, guilds and associations to create an incredible first year for new students and show everything that Aalto consists of. AFYE provides funding for events organised for new students during the upcoming academic year.

Further information on AFYE’s Into site: https://into.aalto.fi/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=6316093. (in Finnish)

4. NEW FACEBOOK SITE OF AALTO-LIIKE ” SPORTS TRYOUTS IN AALTO”

AYY’s Sports Section Aalto-liike has opened a new Facebook site ”Sports tryouts in Aalto”. On the site, associations or other parties can market their sports tryouts or sports events where anyone can participate. Like the site and read more at https://www.facebook.com/SportsTryoutsInAalto.

5. NEW SPORTS EVENT FOR AALTO MEMBERS IN THE AUTUMN

During this spring, approximately ten sports associations of Aalto have planned an event for the next autumn with AYY’s representatives. The aim of the event is to make the activities of Aalto sports associations more familiar to all Aalto students. The event will consist of a more competitive multiathlon, where teams go through checkpoints arranged by associations in suitable locations (much in the same way as in KY City Challenge), and a laid-back fair organised in connection with the event, where associations can tell more about their activities and possibly organise some tryouts. The event will be organised at the turn of September-October.

Now is a good time to let us know if your sports association wants to join and organise a checkpoint for the competition and/or participate in the fair. The sooner your association gets involved, the better chances you have to contribute to the implementation of this new event!

Registrations and further information on the event: sami.laakso@aalto.fi

6. KYL TO PUBLISH A GROUNDBREAKING POEM ALBUM IN JUNE

In June, Helsinki Academic Male Choir (KYL) will publish a record consisting of male choir compositions based on poems of Larin-Kyösti. The album is groundbreaking in the Finnish choral scene, as its focus is solely on one poet’s lyrics and the expedition to the diverse stories of human life which they present.

Read more at http://www.kyl.fi/uutiset. (in Finnish)

7. PARTICIPATE IN THE MAKING OF ESPOO CINÉ FESTIVAL!

Every year, a large group of volunteers participate in the making of Espoo Ciné Film Festival (16-25 Aug 2013), without whom the festival would simply not exist. Voluntary workers get to see the festival films for free, have free meals every day, get a staff t-shirt and the festival catalogue, as well as a letter of reference at request. And when the festival is over, there is a party for the volunteers. Many volunteers have such a good time that they come back year after year to build this warm-hearted festival together.

Join the hustle of the first film festival of the autumn, and go behind the scenes to look how the film festival with 25,000 visitors is organised. Tasks vary from ticket sales to info desk and decorating. You can participate as long as you are over 18-years old, have an active attitude and you are willing to sacrifice your time in good company. Help is needed particularly during the festival, but also a few weeks before it.

Further information and registration form are available at: http://www.espoocine.fi/2013/talkoolaiset. (in Finnish)

8. BLOOMIN’ AFRICA ’14

Aalto University Student Union is taking about 30 students to Africa in the beginning of 2014! BLOOM is a journey that will be remembered as a great cultural experience. BLOOM is a way to find and learn.

BLOOM, Bridge of Learning – Operation: OndA! in Maputo, is a journey to Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, and it’s surroundings. We will spend three weeks in an African environment, in the Mozambican culture and, of course, with great people.

We will be working in different ways with a local non-governmental organization, ASSCODECHA as part of the project of a Finnish NGO, Taksvärkki (Operation: Day’s Work). Our project will consist of challenging tasks with, for example, infrastructure, education, and economic development or any special useful skills we got.

We are looking for people from all possible backgrounds, of all possible experience levels, with different kinds of skills and of all possible ages. These people will organize art workshops, film documentaries, teach entrepreneurial skills, build sanitary facilities etc. etc. However, the trip is all about learning and sharing experiences in two directions.

Part of the trip is reserved for relaxing and taking some time for ourselves. This could include safaris, water sports, day trips and so on. You decide! Application will be arranged in September. Keep your eyes and ears open for additional information. This time for Africa!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO INCLUDE YOUR OWN NEWS IN THIS NEWSLETTER?

Please send a brief text by Wednesday, 10am, to the address jarjestoasiat@ayy.fi. The news will be translated so you can submit your text in Finnish. The contents of the newsletter are ultimately edited by AYY’s Specialist in Organisational Affairs and Communications Joonas Jylhä (joonas.jylha@ayy.fi, tel: 050 520 9442).

You decide!

Apply in September and get ready for the sunshine. Keep your eyes and ears open for more. This time for Africa!

In the future, student discounts will range from 45 to 55 per cent on basic and extra class tickets, so that the biggest discounts apply to the least popular train services and the smallest discounts to the most popular train services.

VR has assured the student organisations that students’ train travel will become cheaper on average, although the most popular train services will be a little bit more expensive in general.

The reform has been made on VR’s initiative and is part of the wider pricing reform, where ticket prices vary more on the basis of demand of train services.

14. Aalto School of Students needs teachers!

What makes you tick and gets you excited? Is it the workings of the brain or drawing what you see in just a few strokes? Or maybe guerilla marketing or crafting origami? Could you share this amazing thing with fellow students?

If you answered yes to the last question, you’re just the person we’re looking for! On 14 September (at Aalto Design Factory) we will arrange Aalto School of Students, a guerilla learning experience where students will teach / instruct other students in a topic which interests them. You can teach in English, Finnish or Swedish.

If you think you have what it takes to be a teacher in Aalto School of Students, contact us with a brief pitch of what you would like to teach and we will get back to you. If you just want to come as a student, keep your eyes open as registration for students opens after we have confirmed which classes we’ll be able to offer.

Press release 30 May 2013

On 30 May the state-owned railway company VR and the Finnish student organisations have agreed on contract changes regarding student ticket prices and marketing cooperation. The changes will come into effect on 3 June 2013.

The changes were initiated by VR as a part of the company’s comprehensive train ticket pricing reform, which aims to adjust ticket prices towards a more demand-based pricing system. Beginning on June 3 the student discount percentage for Basic and Extra class tickets will start to vary between 45 to 55 per cent. What this means is that students receive the highest discount for tickets with low demand, while more popular tickets entitle to a lower discount.

VR has convinced the student organisations that the reform will, on average, make travelling by train more affordable for students – even despite the slight increase in the prices of the most popular departures.

The student organisations demand an evaluation of the effects of the reforms once they come into force.

Chairpersons of the student organisations state that ”the priority [of the student organisations] in this reform is to secure that students, now and in the future, can make the occasional visit back home without having to spend their whole month’s lunch budget. We assume that VR, being a completely state-owned railway company, shares our goals and we hope to continue our successful relationship with them.”
